The problem with charity is, more often than not it continues the idea of power instead of moving the giver into solidarity with the humiliated and the givee into a dignity inhabited by the powerful. At least, this is what I have found in my life.
So, is charity bad?
By no means, it has played a formative role in far too many people’s lives on either side of the charitable line to deny it.
What do I long for in my life at this stage though?
I long for an eschatological hope that inspires the work of my feet in the dirt here and now. And for that hope to further move me into finding out the truth…that the differences between others and I are far, far fewer than I am willing to admit…my hunch is that those differences might not exist at all.
And in the midst of that story I hope to receive and give a tangible hospitality that bares proof of the resurrection.
