This week is Holy Week!! So sweet. We begin Holy Week with Palm Sunday. A count down to the death and eventual resurrection of our Lord. Sunday was Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. People laid palms and cloaks out for him while singing out Hosanna in the highest. But within only four days Jesus would have his last Seder meal (a meal to remember the passover). Although the seder was normally observed on Friday Jesus had to have it on Maundy Thursday because by Friday he himself would become the passover lamb. Saturday is the longest day of the week as we wait in devastation to see if Jesus will rise from the dead. Which is followed by the miracle of miracles, Resurrection Sunday.
Along with normal Sunday gatherings, I get the opportunity this year to help put together and lead the Good Friday service along with Lee Jost. I am very excited. Our service will be a Tenebrea service. Through out the evening we will have 7 candles lit. Through out the evening we will have readings and narratives coordinating with the systematic extinguishing of the candles. By the end all the lights in the room are off and we have one candle left, the Christ candle. We then have one more narrative and blow that candle out. Then there is darkness accompanied by a cymbal crash to symbolize the death of Christ. Afterwards everyone leaves silently.
Then when people come back for Easter services all the lights are on, to represent the bodily resurrection.
May you have a blessed and tension filled Holy Week that ends with the miracle of Christ alive.
